Paediatric Rheumatology Trainee Forum

We are keen to advise and support all junior doctors hoping to involve Paediatric Rheumatology in their UK training, including:

  • Paediatric trainees hoping to train on the national GRID scheme to work as tertiary specialists in Paediatric Rheumatology
  • Paediatric trainees hoping to train to work as General Paediatricians with an interest in Paediatric Rheumatology
  • Adult Rheumatology trainees hoping to work with adolescents or transitional services

  • Higher Specialist Training in Paediatric Rheumatology
Higher Specialist Training (HST) is what used to be Specialist Registrar training (involving training as a tertiary specialist or general paediatrician with an interest in specialties), obviously now new paediatric trainees apply for Run Through ST training schemes. We include below details of the HST syllabus in paediatric rheumatology and also the Core competences for general paediatrics which includes rheumatology.

RCPCH - a framework of competences for core higher specialist training in paediatrics (Oct 2005)

RCPCH - a framework of competences for Higher Specialist Training in Rheumatology (2006)

There is a national training programme for HST in paediatric sub-specialities (called the National Grid) and details of the process are available from RCPCH website, the Chair or members of CSAC.

The training syllabus listed below is to be replaced in the near future by the Competency Based Framework for HST (as listed above), and will be assessed using tools currently being developed by PMETB in conjunction with RCPCH. For the time being CSAC recommends that you refer to both the Competency based Framework and the syllabus listed below to give guidance on the areas that you need to cover in your training and to discuss with your Educational Supervisor.
